Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt.
This activity focuses on teaching you how to encourage and develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities using their love of toys and hunting. Tracking and scent work brings you to the very essence of what a dog is all about and gives the dog a chance to do what they do best – use their nose. Using a positive reinforcement training system without food treats, tracking is always done on leash using a ‘tracking or long line’.
Dogs Love It.
Because we do not use food to teach our dogs to track, the first class starts with play exercises indoors to teach article identification. The classes will be a combination of sight and scent theory working toward practical track laying. It’s fun, builds confidence, uses lots of mental and physical energy and creates good teamwork between dog and handler.
Initially starting with exercises indoors, moving to outdoors and gradually building to more intricate areas to allow the dog to follow a scent trail/track.
Exercises will begin with article association and identification, progressing as your dog succeeds to finally following an invisible trail leading to the hidden object or person (quarry). Your dog can learn to search for a specific scent. It is a fun and intricate game for any dog that already has a good understanding of basic commands and gives both dog and handler an enjoyable activity to do together – a game that can grow in complexity as you both learn.
Pre-requisite: This class is a more advanced training level and therefore your dog must have a basic level of obedience training with reliable sit/down and recall.
Small group classes with a maximum of 3 dogs.
